Chanukah: In Defense of Judaism

Email Print PDF

Happy Chanukah, from your gun rabbi. What does Chanukah have to do with guns? Back at the start of the Jewish rebellion against Greek religious oppression, there was not yet clarity with regard to the Torah Law of fighting a war on Shabbos.1 The experiences of that period made it very clear that the Jewish people need to be prepared to defend ourselves from those who would oppress us, wherever and whenever they may come.

Islamic Terrorism is not Just Anti-Semitic

Email Print PDF

For those who are still fooling themselves, this week's terrorism headlines should change your mind -- Islamic terrorism is not just directed at Jews. It is not about Israel or US politics or policies, it is not "caused" by US foreign policy, the War on Terror, the war in Iraq or Afghanistan, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the "plight of the Palestinians."

Still don't get it? So why did Islamic terrorists -- masquerading in Reuters as "Militants", whatever that means -- bomb church-goers in Egypt? Could it be that the Coptic Christians were getting ready to join the US forces in Iraq? Are they supporters of Israel? Jews in disguise?

Or maybe Islamic terrorism is about hatred of and intolerance for anything that isn't Islam, and it will only end when good people everywhere join together to crush these bullies?

Where are the Muslims in condemning this cowardly attack on peaceful innocents? Where are the leaders of the supposed "Religion of Peace"?

Do Jewish "Gun Control" Advocates Fuel Anti-Semitism?

Anti-Jewish rhetoric is increasingly apparent in America. It surfaced recently at some "Occupy" protest locations. Anti-Jewish vandals defaced a New York City neighborhood just a few days ago.

Opinion polls regarding anti-Jewish sentiment mean very little in this regard. Short of a fanatic, who is going to candidly answer a question from a complete stranger asking if they distrust or hate Jews? No, distrust or hatred of Jews is far more likely to be discussed among friends in closed settings.

Remarkably, in the face of the growing overt anti-Jewish sentiment, Jews remain overwhelmingly supportive of so-called "gun control" policies. While exact statistics are hard to come by, we can logically extrapolate from the 78% of Jews who voted for Obama in 2008 to conclude that the overwhelming majority of American Jews support the Democrat agenda, including citizen disarmament, the so-called "gun control" schemes.

Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership has, for more than twenty years, placed "gun control" in quotes. This innocuous phrase is actually a form of deceptive semantic trickery. "Gun control" ALWAYS means gun registration. Gun registration is a means by which governments know which citizens are armed, and with what types of firearms.

A Letter from a Priest

Email Print PDF

I received the below letter, which I am posting here anonymously with the permission of the author. It is because of situations like this that I think it is so important to teach the truth about your G-d-given right to protect yourself.

Dear  Rabbi Bendory,

I just read your article from the NJJN dated June 15, 2011. I wanted to thank you. I am an Episcopal priest in Somewhere, USA and have had a stalker. He first began stalking me a few years ago, but was sent to federal prison on a different felony conviction. He got out recently after serving a full sentence. He has begun stalking me again. I found out from his former parole officer that he has also committed rape and is very dangerous. The  police said that a gun would be a good thing for me to have. I was very reluctant to do so. I am one of those mothers who would not let her children use sticks and pretend they were guns. After much thought, prayer and talking with other law enforcement I decided to get a gun. I have begun Weapons and Tactics classes and have discovered to my surprise that I am a good aim.  It has been very difficult to deal with the  idea of taking a life and the article has helped me grapple with the theological aspect of self defense.

Thank you - and many blessings on your work,

Reverend Jane Doe

Rector, Church of Somewhere

Reverend "Jane", my G-d bless you and protect you.

Chanukah Greetings

It is said that every Jewish Holiday is the same: “they tried to destroy us; we won; let’s eat!” — and like all humor, there’s a certain amount of truth to this.

Like every Jewish Holiday, Chanukah has its heroes and villains. The villains of Chanukah — the Hellenists — sought the spiritual destruction of the Jewish people. They outlawed observance of Sabbath and Holidays, forbade circumcision, and placed an idol in the Holy Temple.

Throughout Jewish History, G-d has always intervened to save us — whether from our enemies or from ourselves. What makes Chanukah different?
