The National Review has a great piece entitled Gun Control Doesn't Work which gives one of the best summary histories of the anti-gun-rights nuts that I think I've seen. It includes an overview of the racist origins of gun control in the US as a tool to control freed slaves.
That in fact highlights one of the differences between a free man and a slave: a free man has the right to defend himself.
